Ask how, not yes or no
“Will they come back?” is hard for a card to answer. “What am I not seeing in this relationship?” gives it far more to work with. Tarot behaves less like a prediction machine and more like a mirror held up to now.
What to Ask the Tarot
The question comes before the cards. Draw the same card on a vague question and the answer stays vague. Here are three principles for sharpening one, plus worked examples by subject.

“What is he thinking?” gets you less than “what am I expecting from this person?”. Cards cannot open somebody else's head, but they are surprisingly good at naming what is available to you.
Put a fence around the time
“Will it work out someday?” cannot be checked. “What should I focus on this month?” can — which means that when you look back, you can tell whether the reading was any use.
